origin and extraction

“Calacatta Crestola” marble is a type of white marble extracted in the Lunigiana area, in the municipality of Carrara in Tuscany, Italy. Lunigiana is an area that hosts some of the oldest marble quarries in the world, with a multi-millennial history of extraction, dating back to around 2,500 years ago.

Always cultivated with diamond wire in the open without the use of explosives, in the last two years this quarry has been the scene of one of the most revolutionary technological innovations in the stone quarrying sector: the consolidation of the bank and the extraction of the single block without overturning the bank: this technology has made it possible to impressively increase (from about 30% to over 90%) the overall yield of the quarry, making it a global model of sustainability all over the world; in the future development of the quarry, the tunnel extraction technique is also increasingly planned, which further contributes to reducing the environmental impact.
